(upbeat music) - The star of the show is Marlow.
It's the town, it's the river, it's the church.
It's the quintessential Englishness of Marlow that I think makes it such a fun location.
I live in Marlow.
All of the locations in the books are real locations.
- We try to deliver the things that you would want to get from this kind of a town, but also try and be surprising about it.
- Action.
- Steve Barron, our brilliant director, talked from the start about wanting that slightly unsettling feeling.
- I was looking at a crime world where you have this underlying tension and you have characters that come into the film that are full of intrigue.
- So what have you got for us?
- Stylistically, I wanted to bring that to this project.
- Nearly all the locations, because of the plot, are river fronting.
- It became very hard to scout locations without being on the river.
We were looking for riverside mansions for our lead character.
- One of the things that really attracted me to the script and the book was the opportunity to design Judith's home.
- This place is something else.
- It was described as a Arts and Crafts mansion, on the river with a boathouse.
I knew that it was gonna be a difficult location to find because it had to do so many things.
We had an interior in Hambledon, which was the sitting room, and we ended up using a second location for the exterior, which was a separate house in Marlow.
The owner agreed to let the garden overgrow.
It had a fantastic conservatory, which directly overlooked the river, which Steve was very keen to put the dannomond in with the rain effects.
We filled the home with lots of archeological fines, lots of books.
- And when I imagine the show, I really imagine Judith's house just as it's been delivered.
It really is exceptional.
- The idea with Becks, we actually found a fantastic location that is one of the oldest properties in Marlow with very, very old windows and the actual sitting room area, we kept a reduced pallet, and that was the room that they used for business.
- Sugar?
- Thank you.
- It kind of reinforced the idea that she was constantly on the job as the Vicar's wife.
We looked at several different options for Susie's house.
The house that we filmed in was actually very neat, so we brought in plants to make it feel freer.
- Everything sort of has its own beauty in a different way that helps characterize women.
We've been so lucky that the town has embraced us as production and let us film everywhere and been very encouraging.
